To the 54th Massachusetts website:

I am a member of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Wisconsin, and have been part of an extensive project to catalog the names of 900 Union veterans buried in one of the largest cemeteries in Milwaukee. One of them is Garth WIlkinson James, wounded at Fort Wagner. I entered him in the SUVCW database today, and was surprised to see nobody had done it earlier.

We would be happy to send you a picture of his grave and to show you his listing in the database.

Thank you,

Tom Mueller

I think letters like these need to be read constantly, so that we are made aware of the horrors of war. Reading these descriptions of real life tragedy should make us feel wary of violence and also thankful that we are still alive.

The nation as a whole chose to ignore both the sacrifice of the black regiments and the implications of their involvement in America’s greatest national crisis. As North and South came together over an increasingly selective interpretation of what the Civil War had been about, the opportunity to reconstruct the nation on a new basis of equality was thrown away.

The article is very interested but base on my research about the 54th massachusetts soldiers it was an infantry regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was one of the first official black units in the United States during the Civil War and there are severely wounded, including seven officers, were taken on the 19th to hospitals at Beaufort, where every care was given them by the medical men, General Saxton, his officers, civilians, and the colored people. i am always reading about it because it is realy nice story

Commenting the first NYTimes archive links about negro soldiers, I have to say that back then one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. But thank god now such racism doesn’t exist anymore.
